CO2 capture by Monoethanolamine (MEA) spray: Droplet gradient optical characterization by Global Rainbow Technique
Abstract:
Generally, chemical reactions have been study in bulk configurations. However, chemical reactions can also be carried out between a discrete phase and a continue phase. A particularly interesting configuration corresponds to the case where the discrete phase is a spray. It has been demonstrated that such a configuration could increase the kinetic of the reaction by a factor 1,000 to 1,000,000 for electrically charged droplets. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to quantify the chemical extend of the chemical reaction between the droplets of the spray and the gas phase such as in the capture of CO2 gas by a spray of Monoethanolamine (MEA). Our presentation at ICLASS 2018 will be focused on the characterization of the gradients in the vicinity of the droplet surface. The measurements have been carried out in the first moments after the injection of MEA droplets in a pure atmosphere of CO2. We will demonstrate that the analysis of the light scattered around the rainbow angle permits to quantify the temporal evolution of gradient of refractive index from which the gradient of carbamate concentration (created by the reaction between MEA and CO2) is extracted.
